Olivia and patty What a beautiful dog!....     What kind of dog is it?
This is what dog lovers say when they meet a Hovawart for the first time. Some wait for an answer, others assume it is an exotic mix because of the coat.

It is very rare to hear: "Oh, look, a Hovawart!  It is then that the owner is surprised, because it is still a very rare breed in France.

And................ it is a guide dog?

Not all guide dogs are Labradors or Golden Retrievers. The Hovawart is an excellent working dog. He likes to be close to his master and can make decisions on his own, qualities that make him an excellent guide dog.

A Hova.... what?

The word "hovawart" comes from the German "hofwart" which means "farm guardian" or "property guardian". "Hova" means "farm or house" and "wart" means "guard". This expression describes his original use perfectly. In the Middle Ages the Hovawart guarded his family and his property against any intruders or wild animals scavenging in the area.

The Hovawart is a German dog. He is vigorous but not heavy. The male is 63-70cm in height at the withers, the female between 58-65cm. The coat is long-haired, slightly wavy and requires little care. He comes in three shades: golden, black and black and tan.

Patty: fun and games after work By nature the Hovawart is a very sociable dog and should never be kept in a kennel or a crate. On the contrary, he is very attached to his master and needs to stay close to him. He is an excellent companion dog and firm but gentle obedience training should be begun at a very young age. As a working dog he can be used as: a guide dog, for search and rescue and as a guard dog.

The first Hovawarts arrived in France in the 1980s. The French Hovawart Club was founded in 1988.
