Description
The Hovawart is a medium-sized dog, vigorous but not heavy. The long coat is impermeable. He is a courageous and attentive dog and a good runner and jumper. The two sexes are easily differentiated.
The International Cynological Federation (ICF) place the breed in Group 2, section 2: molossoide mountain type.

- Male: between 63cm and 70cm high at the withers
- Female: between 58cm and 65cm high at the withers
- The length of the trunk is about 10 - 15% more than the height at the withers.
Weight
Between 30 and 45 kg.
Head
Robust, with a wide, rounded brow. The stop is well marked. The nose is straight and about as long as the skull. The skin is taught.
The muzzle pares down only slightly. Black and tan, and black Hovawarts have black noses. Tan dogs also have black noses but a nose with a 'snowy' sheen is allowed.
The lips fit firmly over the teeth.
The shape of the skull differentiates the male from the female.

Eyes Oval in shape. Dark to medium brown in colour.
Ears Set high and far apart, triangular in shape, falling limply. Their tips are slightly rounded. |
Neck
Strong, of medium length, full-coated but without a fanon.
Body
A wide, low, strong chest. The back is firm and straight. The croups droops slightly and is not very long.
Tail
Bushy, it descends beyond the knee. The feather drops when relaxed, but is raised when the dog is excited.
Limbs
Solid and straight.
Poil
The hair is long and firm, slightly wavy and flat. There is only a slight undercoat. The hair is longer on the chest, the abdomen, at the back of the forequarters, on the thighs and the tail. It is short on the head and on the front of the limbs.

The Hovawart comes in three shades:
- Black - about 10%
- Black with tan markings - about 55%
- tan - about 35%
Small white spots on the chest and a few white hairs are permitted on the tips of the toes and the tail.
Black and tan:
The coat is a shiny black colour, the tan markings are of a medium blonde shade. All the tan markings are clearly outlined and well-defined. Small white spots on the chest and a few white hairs are permitted on the tips of the toes and the tail. The pigmentation of the eyelids, the lips and the pads is black.
On the head the tan markings begin under the muzzle, surround the lips and blend with the tan markings below the throat. The tan dots above the eyes are clearly demarcated.
On the chest there are two tan markings next to each other. They may be joined.
On the forequarters the tan markings begin at the toes and rise up on to the inside of the limb to the elbow. They do not reach as high on the outside of the limb.
On the hindquarters the tan markings begin at the toes and rise to the level of the knee. Above the knee the tan marking makes a straight line on the anterior side of the limb up to the abdomen.
There is also a marking on the top of the root of the tail. |
Black:
The coat is a shiny black. The pigmentation of the eyelids, the lips and the pads is black. |
Tan:
The coat is a glossy medium blond. It lightens towards the abdomen and the limbs. The pigmentation of the eyelids, the lips and the pads is black. |
